An accessible unit only works if someone can actually get to it. Placement matters as much as the unit itself, so we set them where the ground is firm and level.
The 2010 ADA Standards give a clear rule for portable units: where single user units are clustered at one location, at least five percent of the units in each cluster must be accessible. The phrase that matters is each cluster. Spreading twenty units across four corners of a park means four clusters, not one, so each corner needs its own accessible unit rather than the whole site sharing a few.
Three things. The floor sits at ground level so there is no step to get in, the interior is wide enough to turn a wheelchair around, and there are grab bars on the walls. The unit also carries the International Symbol of Accessibility on the outside so it can be found at a glance. We often pair one with event restrooms in the same delivery.
An accessible unit takes up more room on the truck and needs more room on the ground, so delivery access is the first factor. After that it is the same list as any rental: how many units, how long you keep them, how often they are serviced, and whether they are part of a larger order with construction restrooms or standard event units. Not by the ADA. The standards specifically exempt structures and sites directly associated with the processes of construction from the accessibility requirements, which covers the job site restrooms provided for construction personnel. That exemption ends where the public begins: a unit set out for visitors, an inspector, or an open house on the same property is not construction personnel use, and the five percent rule applies again.
On firm, level ground, with a route to it that someone using a wheelchair or a walker can actually travel. Grass is fine when it is flat and dry; soft turf, loose gravel, and a slope are not. It also wants to sit at the end of a bank rather than boxed in, so the door has room to swing and nobody has to squeeze past a queue to reach it.
