Summer rentals in White Bear Lake are almost all event work. The Thursday night market runs seven consecutive weeks from the middle of June, closing the downtown blocks east of Highway 61 with more than two hundred street vendors, two stages and a car show. The three week festival that follows is fifty years old and carries sixty separate events, a grand day parade, a beach dance and fireworks over the lake. Both are recurring bookings.
The lake and the old downtown between Third and Fourth are the center of town, with Railroad Park and the Banning Avenue lot doing duty as stages all summer. This year's pavement rehabilitation covers Banning, Cook, Second and Third and runs from May into October. Two things matter for a gathering here: the city closes its park restrooms for the whole cold season, and the county park on the lake has no picnic shelters at all.
